MAKOplasty Knee Surgery

MAKOplasty partial knee resurfacing is a new surgical procedure utilizing robotic technology to accomplish consistent precision surgery in reconstructing damaged joints.  Your orthopedic surgeon controls the robotic arm which helps him make precise cuts in your knee to correct your problem.  Currently, MAKOplasty is available for knee and hip surgery only.  There are now over 5000 knee procedures done successfully with the RIO robotic-assist from MAKO Surgical.  Many patients and surgeons have been ecstatic with the results of this new robotic technology!  If you are a patient with knee arthritis you may be a candidate for MAKOplasty.  Only your surgeon can tell so make an appointment with a surgeon who is certified to use the RIO Robotic-arm.  You won’t regret your decision to investigate the options for your knee.  You may regret though if you end up with a total knee replacement and find that you may have been a candidate for partial knee resurfacing with the RIO Robot.

The MAKOplasty® procedure is an innovative treatment option for patients who suffer from early to mid-stage osteoarthritis of the knee.

Is MAKOplasty the right treatment option for you?

MAKOplasty partial knee resurfacing is an innovative treatment for early to mid-stage osteoarthritis in either the medial (inside), patellofemoral (top) or the lateral (outside) compartment of the knee.  It can also be performed as a bicompartmental procedure on both the medial and patellofemoral portions of the knee.  MAKOplasty can:

  • Promote a more rapid relief from pain, shorter hospital stay and quicker return to daily activities when compared to traditional knee replacement surgery
  • Result in a more “natural” feeling knee following surgery
  • Be performed on an outpatient basis in some cases

The procedure is performed using the RIO Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic System. Surgeons use the RIO System to pre-operatively plan and map the area(s) of diseased bone to be removed.  During surgery, 3-dimensional visualization and the robotic arm provide the surgeon with visual, tactile and auditory feedback so that only the diseased portion of the knee is resurfaced, sparing healthy bone stock and tissue.

Typically, patients who share the following characteristics are good candidate for MAKOplasty:

  • Knee pain with activity, usually on the inner knee, under the kneecap or the outer knee
  • Start up knee pain or stiffness when activities are initiated from a sitting position
  • Failure to respond to non-surgical treatments, injections or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication

MAKOplasty can be performed on either an inpatient or outpatient basis depending on what your surgeon determines is the right course of treatment for you.  In many cases, patients are permitted to walk soon after surgery, drive a car within two weeks and return to normal daily activities shortly thereafter.  Consult with your surgeon at the Robotic Surgery Center to determine if MAKOplasty may be the right treatment option for you.
